How it works
- Solid black rectangles. Each box you draw is burned into the page as a solid black fill with pdf-lib, permanently covering whatever was underneath in every viewer.
- Erased, not just covered. Every page with a box is re-rendered as a flat image, so the content under the black box is removed from the file itself. Text on redacted pages stops being selectable; pages without a box are untouched. You can verify the result with the Extract Text tool.
- No file-upload endpoint. Document processing happens in this browser tab. BrowserPDF has no file-upload endpoint.
Frequently asked questions
Is the redaction permanent?
Yes. The rectangles are burned into the PDF as solid black fills, so anyone opening the file sees black boxes instead of the covered content. Keep your original file safe if you may need the unredacted version.
Can I undo redaction after downloading?
No. Once you apply and download, the black rectangles become part of the page content and cannot be removed from the output file. Always keep your original PDF as a backup.
Does it remove the text underneath the black box?
Yes. Every page that carries a redaction box is rebuilt as a flat image, so the covered text no longer exists anywhere in the output file. As a side effect, text on redacted pages is no longer selectable or searchable; pages without a box keep their text. You can confirm with the Extract Text tool.
