Protect PDF
Add password protection to your PDF so only people with the password can open it. Everything runs on your device: your file is never sent to a server.

How it works
- The password stays in your browser. When you set a password, it is used locally to encrypt the PDF. There is no upload endpoint, so neither the password nor the file can leave your device.
- Standard PDF encryption. The PDF is encrypted with 128-bit RC4 encryption, the most widely supported standard. Any PDF reader will prompt for the password when opening the file.
- Permissions are advisory. Permission restrictions (printing, copying, etc.) are enforced by most PDF readers, but a determined user with the right tools can bypass them. The password itself is the real protection.
Frequently asked questions
What does protecting a PDF do?
It adds password encryption so the PDF can only be opened by someone who has the password you set. You can also restrict printing, copying, and editing.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. The password is used only inside your browser tab to encrypt the PDF. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no server that could see it.
Can I set different permissions?
Yes. You can allow or restrict printing (high or low resolution), copying text and images, modifying, annotating, filling forms, and document assembly.
